CIVICS 101 - Democracy needs YOU!
Our country was founded as a rebellion against monarchy and authoritarianism. Our Declaration of Independence lists the grievances that led to the formation of the United States of America. Our Constitution lists our civil rights, the organization of our government, and our foundational rules. Our foundational governmental rules includes the separation of church and state and the balance of power between the 3 branches of federal government (“checks and balances”).
Inform yourself of the rules of government and the laws of our country and state so that you are aware when officials and law enforcement violate the tenants of our democracy. An empowered population is a population that can govern themselves through our legal and governmental system!
First step: Register to vote!
Second step: Find out who works for you! Who are the elected officials that represent you at your legal address? (They represent you regardless of your voter registration status.)
Third step: Take direct civic action! Current HOCTX civic action recommendations include…
1. Stop ‘ALPRs,” aka pre-warrant mass surveillance technology at the city level. Learn more and take action.
2. Write letters to the editor about local issues and submit your civics testimony as a letter to the editor!
